Arcade Games Strike Back on Your PC! (from The Ajou Globe Vol XIV No.67 September, 2002)

Many of you have fond memories in the Arcade Game Center. Now you can enjoy those arcade games on your PC using special software program called "Emulator". Emulator is a program that emulates different environments (or platforms). Then what is an ‘Arcade Machine”? An arcade machine is placed in a Game Center (or Amusement Center) to provide video games for commercial purposes.


On December 24, 1996, Nicola Salmoria began working on his single hardware emulators (such as Multi-Pac), which he later merged into one program in January 1997. He named his accomplishment the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, or MAME for short.

Since then MAME has been improved and at the time of writing MAME is in version 0.61. Now MAME supports most of the arcade machine games. So you can enjoy the arcade machine games at home on your PC! It is a wonderful thing to a video game maniac like me. We can look back to the good old childhood memories of games in which we could be heroes who saved the world. My favorites are “Final Fight”, “Gun Bird”, ”Samurai Show Down”, “King of Fighters”, “Street Fighter”, ”Bubble Bobble”, “Double Dragon”, “Snow Bros” , “R-Type”, “Jackal “, “The Punisher”, and so on.

We can also enjoy some of the newest games. For Instance “King of fighters 2001”, “Metal Slug 4”, “ESP RA.DE”, and so on. To execute these games, we need some data files. We called these files “ROM files”. ROM files contain the binary data of each game. These game data are extracted from the cartridges of arcade machines. There are many attempts to extract game data from arcade machines all over the world. We can easily find ROM files that we want.

The best place to find ROM files is naturally on Internet websites. Many websites have ROMs of arcade video games supported by MAME, and they allow you to search by year, manufacturer, genre, description, alphabet order and game name. If you like video games, visit the reference sites and make your very own arcade machine using your PC. Blow away your boredom with MAME.
